Quick study – lemon tree

20170730_112052-1

I used a 7 x 5 inch canvas board that had been pre-prepared with a colour ground of Yellow Ochre Acrylic paint. For the sketch, I used a Burnt Umber watercolour marker, as it’s water-soluble and allows me to blend sections using just a water brush pen to softly indicate the shadows.

Acrylic paint colours used:

  • Titanium White Heavy Body (Golden Acrylics Paints)
  • Titanium White Galeria (Winsor & Newton)
  • Azo Yellow Medium (Winsor Newton)
  • Phthalo Green (Blue Shade) (Winsor Newton)
  • Permanent Alizarin Crimson (Winsor Newton)
  • Burnt Umber (Golden Acrylics Paints)
  • Ultramarine Blue (Golden Acrylics Paints)

Once I had finished the painting I simplified the background by blocking in some of the shadows against the wall in a slightly darker tone.  I also accentuated the lemon by adding some thicker impasto onto the sides in the light. This impasto area is only on the lemons so it makes them stand out more from the background.

Me too! I’m on his email list and also bought a couple of his classes…but, what’s really great about him is that he has a lot of free stuff that he freely shares AND he always, always, answers any technical questions that you post on his website! 🙂 Nice to meet you, Eileen, btw! 🙂
