Botanicals, botanicals and more botanicals….

I love drawing flowers and especially botanical drawings.  What I have recently been trying out is water soluble pencil crayons. Watercolour or water-soluble pencils crayons are a unique cross-over between drawing and painting. You draw with them as you would with any pencil or crayon, but then you run a wet brush over your drawing.  This disperses the colour which turns the “crayon pigment”on the page into a water colour wash.  Watercolor pencils are specifically manufactured with a binder that dissolves in water, making this method possible.  I use pentel brushes with a water reservoir to do my washes.

There are different shapes and sizes of reservoir brush allowing you to work with a range of broad strokes to very fine detail. This one is a medium and the size I probably use the most when using water soluble pencil crayons.

These are fantastic. What is the second flower? The detail on the branch is awesome.

    Thank you Andre

Hey Tiny! Its a Rhododendron. We probably know them as a variety of the Azalea family. Done in the same technique I did your prickly pears.

I’m thoroughly enjoying experimenting with them Lyn. I have recently bought masking fluid that one usually uses with watercolours to experiment with when using these water soluble pencil crayons.
