A collage of proteas
Before I began painting I added a cadmium red coloured ground to the whole canvas. I wanted the red to come through the grey background as well as show through the scratchings from the palette knife around the protea centres and their outside petals and leaves. The red is also great for warm layers later…
Pink Magnolias
Magnolias have the most delicious sweet fruity smell that can fill a block a mile long. Most magnolias flower on bare stems in late winter/spring, producing beautiful creamy-white flowers for many months. The gorgeous white saucer shaded blooms have a light to deep pink or purplish-pink colour to their petals. Close-ups
Bachelors button
Did you know that another name for the cornflower is the bachelors button. The name, Bachelor’s Button, may have arisen during Victorian times when the flowers were often placed in the button holes of men’s suit coats. In his 1851 book, The Flower Garden, Joseph Breck dismisses them as a common weed known as Blue…

Summer
Summer in Europe (June, July and August) is the warmest time of year, when landscapes and flowers are at their most vibrant and the days are at their longest. And lets not forget all those busy bees and other pollinators.
Violaceous lilacs
I love lilacs for so many reasons, their beautiful blooms, their exquisitely pungent perfume, and most of all their colour. I was trying to think of all the colour names that come to mind when painting lilacs…. Lavender, violet, plum, magenta, amarinthine blue, violet amethyst, mulberry, mauve, periwinkle, purple, pomegranate, wine red, lilac, white
Be my zest
I absolutely love home made lemonade as well as painting lemons, and on a hot summers day the two go hand in hand. This lemonade recipe is simple, uncomplicated and is wonderful for a special occasion, or a just because event on one of those balmy summer evenings. Ingredients 1 ¾ cups white sugar 8 cups…
Bramble roses
Once the background had been painted a variety of greens were added to represent the dense tangled foliage of the bramble roses. Palette knives are symmetric, with no sharpened cutting edge, and often have a slight crank between the handle and the blade. The one I am using in the above short clip is one of my favourites….
An arrangement of lilacs
Lilacs – Acrylic on 300gsm paper, 30 cm X 42 cm These close-ups show how the delicate watercolour droplets give an illusion of the delicate lilac buds and add to the delicate composition of the flower arrangement in spite of the heavy textured application of paint. Thick, textured paint is applied with a combination of…
Delphiniums
Delphiniums are showy, spiky blooms on a tall, sometimes towering stem. These beautiful slightly old fashioned cottage garden flowers bring unrivalled height and colour to summer gardens with their showy spikes of vibrant flowers. The most common colours are shades of blue or purple which are filling this bucket. Initially I applied a gel medium…
