Fabulous flowers & a summer art exhibition

Preparing for an exhibition involves a huge amount of work and not something you can do the night before, so for the last 6 months I have slowly been building up artwork for the exhibition that will be taking place in the La Lucia mall in Durban from 24 November 2022 to 11 December 2022.

Upcycled treasures

Upcycling or creative reuse is one of my favourite pastimes especially when it comes to old frames that either have photographs or paintings in that don’t appeal anymore. These particular frames I bought years ago in an interior design store filled with shabby chic delights. The photographs that filled the frames originally had faded beyond…

Cosmos fields

Before we were married Phil and I drove up to St Lucia (in KZN) from Cape Town over the Easter Weekend in April of 1989.  We drove through the Free State and it was one of those unforgettable experiences that will remain forever etched in my mind. All I could see was sandstone mountains, flaming…

Flaming sunflowers

Sunflowers always make me think of slightly shaggy, sloppily dressed flowers with a bonhomie and lackadaisical attitude as their faces follow the sun across the horizon in a worshipful gaze. They even look the part with their haphazard bright yellow petals radiating out from a dark burnt umber heart. Acrylic on canvas 40 X 40…

Delft apricots

Blue is a colour that resonates with me. I love it. I love other colours too, red would be one, but blue is one of those versatile colours that you can incorporate in any kind of design with most colours and it will just work. It’s a calming colour, I even painted some of the…

A vase of spring

Spring daffodils Acrylic on canvas sheet (application with a palette knife only) 30 X 42 cm I’m not a huge fan of summer, especially here in Zululand where the summers are hot, humid and sticky! Im a Winter person, but I love flowers of all seasons and how each flower and smell is unique to…

Lockdown quick studies…

Lockdown has given me much opportunity for creativity, but at the same time there have been many projects that have been put on the back burner due to a lack of enough time in a day.  Now that we have the time I have to divide myself between my painting and those back-burner DIY projects….

Tank Puppies

For the last year or so I have been raising funds to assist with protection and saving of our Rhino. Initially as a guesthouse we supported local anti-poaching units, but I wanted to take this further. As an artist living in a guesthouse I have access to a large amount of international tourists who stay…

The plight of the rhino

As I am sure most of you who know me and follow my blog know how near and dear rhinos are to me. Earlier this year I made a commitment to donate all profits from the sales of my rhino paintings and prints to the preservation and protection of our rhino. In August of 2019…

Aloes

The  Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is just an hour from St Lucia.  In that short hour one travels from subtropical dune forest to the Hluhluwe region, which has hilly topography where altitudes range from 80 to 540 metres above sea level. The high ridges support coastal scarp forests, with valley bushveld at lower levels. The north of…

Fabulous Fuchsia

I love the glorious tangles of multicoloured flowers that fill a fuchsia bush.  Another one of my favourite flowers, (and I have many) that unfortunately does not like to grow in our sub-tropical climate.  Their buds form in pairs, and their flowers, once opened, have interesting and unusual shapes.  This particular variety – Ballerina Blau,…

Moth orchid

Most of us know the Phalaenopsis orchid as the moth orchid because they look like moths in flight.  What I find incredible is there is fossil evidence that these orchids were around when the dinosaurs roamed the planet, and we now happily buy them from the local  Woolies or garden nursery as houseplants that are…
