My new silicone blade has been a great addition to my artists toy box.
- Ideal for moving large volumes of paint around on the canvas – works like a spatula
- Helps control the density of applied colour, or erase excess paint
- Can be used to create sharp edges, or help blend and soften edges
It is not quite a brush, and not quite a palette knife and has a stiff yet flexible applicator. It is crafted from flexible silicone to allow for expressive versatility. There are two styles: The wedge where the edges are ergonomically designed to fit in your hand allowing for a more direct interaction with your work. I find this particular tool a lot less flexible than the silicone blade. The blades are mounted on brush handles offering a blend of the old traditional style of brush, but with a silicone wedge instead of bristles.
It is designed for use with a number of mediums but I use it specifically with heavy-bodied acrylic paints. I think they would also be great for some of the application of mixed mediums I used in my artworks.
The clean-up is easy peazy with the wedge. You just wipe clean and is solvent resistant. I find in most cases clean up can be done with mild soap and water, while dried paint can be peeled off the silicone surface.

Both background and vase were painted, or should I say paint was applied with the silicone blade in the above painting.
