Summer Christmas flowers

The hydrangea represents gratitude, grace and beauty. It also radiates abundance because of the lavish number of flowers and the generous round shape. Its colours symbolise love, harmony and peace. Known for their beautiful blooms and leafy foliage, hydrangeas are the epitome of summer.

40 cm X 30 cm X 4 cm, Acrylic on canvas

Growing up we lived in Newlands, and my Mom had the most incredible hydrangeas growing down the whole one side of our house. The blooms were massive in a mixture of pink, white, soft lime greens and whites and blues ranging from soft baby blues to deep ultramarine. I always remember her picking them with their massive heads and arranging them in a beautiful almost black oval vase and putting them in the lounge over Christmas. She used to call them the Southern Hemisphere Christmas flower.

I absolutely love hydrangeas Irene. I found some in Maywoods in Monzi, but they won’t grow here at all. This soil is awful and hydrangeas would never survive in this garden. I saw some red ones the other day and they are absolutely magnificent. I’ve never seen anything like them! Check out Adene flower farm on IG. She is growing them.
