This was an exercise in creating a shape from developing the light and shade to build the form of the apple. For the coloured ground (the yellow under painting I apply to the white canvas before I draw on the shape and begin painting) I used the following: Yellow ochre Cadmium yellow light For the main painting: And for the back ground and apple: Raw Umber Ultramarine Blue Cadmium Yellow Light Titanium White Burnt Sienna Cadmium Red In order to create a bright glow underneath the form of the apple, I used a mix of Yellow ochre & Cadmium yellow light to a white pre-primed canvas panel (the flat yellow area representing where i plan to paint the apple). By varying the consistency on the paint with water I can scrub in the background tone to give a sense of the dark and light values. I then add some Titanium white and Ultramarine blue to paint a thicker application in the foreground. Then I begin work on the apple painting in the form shadow using a mix of Raw umber & Cadmium yellow light. I just use these two colours, lightening the tone here and there to show the reflected light. Burnt sienna is then introduced to add a slightly warmer tone to the transition line of the form of the apple. Then with the Cadmium yellow light and Titanium white, I paint the halftone and finally the highlight. On the apple there is a soft warm glow around the edges that are on the light side. To illustrate this I use a watery mix of Burnt sienna just to glaze over the golden green for some subtle warmth. I then paint in some pure Cadmium red light down the side where the red blush is visible on the apple. Just to further define where the light falls I mix together some Cadmium red light and Cadmium yellow light to get a lighter orange, and painted this in the area closest to the highlight where the light is hitting the apple. Then with the Burnt sienna mix, I darken the bottom side of the Cadmium red light so I have a dark area at the bottom and a lighter area at the top.
