A lilac landscape……

Lilac Landscape
Acrylic on canvas
30 X 30cm

Paints used in this canvas

Titanium white
Burnt umber
Ultramarine blue
Cadmium yellow light
Permanent Alizarin crimson

To the primed canvas I applied a yellow ochre coloured ground. This will help to give me a unified tone to the landscape and a nice under glow of colour. With Burnt Umber & Titanium White I established the darkest and the lightest areas of the picture on the canvas.

Then I started to add some basic colour in blocks to the painting, slowly developing it and blending the colours into one another as I went – this is especially nice for clouds because it prevents that hard painted edge from forming. The process involved was a little more painterly in approach than I was used to, but the end result for a first time seascape/landscape was OK. When I look at it now I see a lot I would like to change. Instead of overworking this one I would just like to try my hand at a few other landscapes and seascapes in this style developing some understanding and insight into how they ‘perform’ and then come back to this when I am ready to deal with it and correct it.
